Ingredients
Cabbage
- 1 large green cabbage
Filling
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (or beef & pork mix)
- ½ cup uncooked rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg
- Salt & black pepper, to taste
- 1 tsp paprika
Sauce
- 1 can (14 oz / 400 g) crushed tomatoes
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 cup water or beef broth
- 1 tbsp sugar (optional, balances acidity)
- Salt & pepper, to taste
Instructions
1️⃣ Prepare the Cabbage
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
- Carefully remove cabbage core.
- Boil cabbage 5–8 minutes, peeling off softened leaves.
- Set aside to cool.
2️⃣ Make the Filling
- In a bowl, mix ground meat, rice, onion, garlic, egg, paprika, salt, and pepper.
3️⃣ Assemble Rolls
- Place filling on each cabbage leaf.
- Fold sides in and roll tightly.
4️⃣ Cook
- Layer leftover cabbage in bottom of pot.
- Arrange rolls seam-side down.
- Mix sauce ingredients and pour over rolls.
- Cover and simmer on low 1½–2 hours.
🍽️ Serving Suggestions
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes or bread
- Add sour cream on top
