These tender, buttery nut roll cookies are filled with a sweet walnut mixture and baked until lightly golden. Inspired by traditional Hungarian Diós kifli, they’re perfect for holidays or coffee time.


📝 Ingredients

Dough

  • 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 package (8 oz / 225 g) cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • Pinch of salt

Walnut Filling

  • 1½ cups (150 g) finely ground walnuts
  • ½ cup (100 g) sugar
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon (optional)

For Finishing

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Dough

  • Mix butter and cream cheese until smooth.
  • Add sugar, salt, and flour.
  • Mix until dough forms.
  • Divide into 2 discs, wrap, and chill 1 hour.

2️⃣ Prepare the Filling

  • In a saucepan, combine walnuts, sugar, and milk.
  • Cook over low heat 2–3 minutes until thick.
  • Stir in vanilla and cinnamon.
  • Cool completely.

3️⃣ Assemble

  • Roll dough into a rectangle (about ⅛-inch thick).
  • Spread walnut filling evenly.
  • Roll up tightly like a jelly roll.
  • Slice into 1-inch pieces.

4️⃣ Bake

  • Place on lined baking sheet.
  • Brush with beaten egg.
  • Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 18–22 minutes until lightly golden.

5️⃣ Finish

  • Cool slightly and dust with powdered sugar if desired.
