Hungarian Potato Cakes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups mashed potatoes (cold, unsalted)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp instant yeast
  • ¾ cup warm water (as needed)

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil

Traditional Toppings

  • Garlic water (2 cloves garlic + warm water)
  • Sour cream
  • Grated cheese

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix mashed potatoes, flour, salt, sugar, and yeast.
  2. Gradually add warm water and knead until a soft dough forms.
  3. Cover and let rest 30 minutes.
  4. Divide dough into balls and flatten into oval cakes.
  5. Fry in hot oil (350°F / 175°C) until golden on both sides.
  6. Drain briefly and serve hot with garlic water, sour cream, and cheese.

Tips

  • Use leftover mashed potatoes for best texture
  • Dough should be soft, not sticky
  • Best eaten fresh 🇭🇺🔥
