Hungarian Potato Cakes
Ingredients
- 2 cups mashed potatoes (cold, unsalted)
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp instant yeast
- ¾ cup warm water (as needed)
For Frying
- Vegetable oil
Traditional Toppings
- Garlic water (2 cloves garlic + warm water)
- Sour cream
- Grated cheese
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix mashed potatoes, flour, salt, sugar, and yeast.
- Gradually add warm water and knead until a soft dough forms.
- Cover and let rest 30 minutes.
- Divide dough into balls and flatten into oval cakes.
- Fry in hot oil (350°F / 175°C) until golden on both sides.
- Drain briefly and serve hot with garlic water, sour cream, and cheese.
Tips
- Use leftover mashed potatoes for best texture
- Dough should be soft, not sticky
