Hungarian Tart🇭🇺

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Make the Crust:
    • In a bowl, whisk flour, powdered sugar, and salt.
    • Rub in the cold butter with your fingertips until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    • Stir in egg yolk and just enough cold water until dough comes together.
    • Form into a disk, wrap in plastic, and chill 30 minutes.
  2. Prepare Filling:
    • Toss apple slices with sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, and lemon zest. Set aside.
  3. Roll & Assemble:
    • Preheat oven to 350 °F (175 °C).
    • Roll chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to fit a 9-inch tart pan with removable bottom.
    • Press dough into pan, trim edges, and dock base with a fork.
    • Arrange apple mixture evenly in crust.
  4. Make Streusel:
    • Combine flour and sugar. Rub in cold butter until pea-sized crumbs form.
    • Sprinkle streusel over apples.
  5. Bake:
    • Bake 40–45 minutes until crust and streusel are golden and apples are tender.
    • Let cool slightly before removing from pan.
  6. Serve:
    • Slice and serve warm or at room temperature.
    • Optional: dust with powdered sugar or serve with a dollop of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

💡 Tips

  • Apples: Tart varieties hold their shape best.
  • Chill dough: Ensures a flaky crust.
  • Even topping: Make sure streusel is spread evenly so the filling cooks uniformly.
