
Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls (Töltött Káposzta) – Recipe Only
Ingredients:
- 1 large sour cabbage or pickled cabbage leaves
- 600 g ground pork or pork & beef mix
- 1/2 cup rice, rinsed
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp sweet Hungarian paprika
- 200 g smoked bacon or sausage, chopped (optional)
Sauce:
- 2 tbsp oil or lard
- 1 tbsp flour
- 1 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
- 2 cups sauerkraut, chopped
- 3 cups water or broth
- 1 bay leaf
Instructions:
- Mix ground meat, rice, onion, garlic, egg, salt, pepper, and paprika.
- Place filling on cabbage leaves, roll tightly, tuck in sides.
- Line pot with sauerkraut and bacon/sausage if using.
- Arrange cabbage rolls on top, add bay leaf.
- Heat oil, stir in flour and paprika; add water/broth to make sauce.
- Pour sauce over rolls until just covered.
- Simmer gently, covered, 1.5–2 hours.
- Serve hot (traditionally with sour cream).
