Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls (Töltött Káposzta) – Recipe Only

Ingredients:

  • 1 large sour cabbage or pickled cabbage leaves
  • 600 g ground pork or pork & beef mix
  • 1/2 cup rice, rinsed
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 200 g smoked bacon or sausage, chopped (optional)

Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp oil or lard
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 2 cups sauerkraut, chopped
  • 3 cups water or broth
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions:

  1. Mix ground meat, rice, onion, garlic, egg, salt, pepper, and paprika.
  2. Place filling on cabbage leaves, roll tightly, tuck in sides.
  3. Line pot with sauerkraut and bacon/sausage if using.
  4. Arrange cabbage rolls on top, add bay leaf.
  5. Heat oil, stir in flour and paprika; add water/broth to make sauce.
  6. Pour sauce over rolls until just covered.
  7. Simmer gently, covered, 1.5–2 hours.
  8. Serve hot (traditionally with sour cream).
