🧺 Ingredients
For the Cabbage and Filling:
- 1 large head of cabbage (or 2 smaller ones)
- 1 lb (450 g) ground pork
- ½ lb (225 g) ground beef
- ½ cup (100 g) uncooked white rice
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 large egg
- 1 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional)
For the Sauce and Layers:
- 2 tbsp oil or lard
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
- 1 can (15 oz / 400 g) tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
- 2–3 cups sauerkraut (with some juice)
- 2 cups water or broth (as needed)
- 1–2 smoked sausages (optional, but traditional)
- Salt, pepper, and sugar to taste
