Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

🇭🇺 Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls (Töltött Káposzta)

Ingredients

Filling:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground pork (or pork & beef mix)
  • ½ cup uncooked rice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Hungarian sweet paprika

Cabbage:

  • 1 large head green cabbage
  • 2 cups sauerkraut (optional, for layering)

Sauce:

  • 2 cups crushed tomatoes or tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Hungarian sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup broth or water
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Core cabbage and boil whole head 5–8 minutes. Remove softened leaves carefully and let cool.
  2. In a bowl, mix ground meat, rice, onion, egg, salt, pepper, and paprika.
  3. Place a spoonful of filling on each cabbage leaf. Fold sides inward and roll tightly.
  4. Spread some sauerkraut on bottom of a large pot (if using). Arrange cabbage rolls seam-side down in layers.
  5. Mix tomato sauce, paprika, sugar, broth, salt, and pepper. Pour over rolls.
  6. Cover and simmer gently 60–90 minutes until rice and cabbage are tender.
  7. Serve hot with a spoonful of sour cream if desired.
