
Here’s an authentic Hungarian Shortbread – Omlós Teasütemény 🇭🇺

🍪 Hungarian Shortbread (Omlós Teasütemény)
🛒 Ingredients
- 250 g (1 cup + 2 tbsp) unsalted butter, softened
- 100 g (½ cup) powdered sugar
- 1 large egg yolk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
- 300 g (2½ cups) all-purpose flour
- Pinch of salt
Optional fillings & toppings
- Apricot or plum jam
- Ground walnuts
- Powdered sugar for dusting
👩🍳 Instructions
- Cream butter & sugar
In a bowl, beat butter and powdered sugar until light and smooth. - Add egg yolk
Mix in egg yolk and vanilla until fully combined. - Form the dough
Add flour and salt.
Mix gently just until a soft dough forms.
Do not overmix. - Chill
Wrap dough and refrigerate 30 minutes (important for shape). - Shape cookies
Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
Roll dough to about ¼ inch (6 mm) thickness.
Cut into shapes or small rectangles.👉 Optional: place a tiny bit of jam or nuts between two cookies to make sandwich cookies. - Bake
Place on parchment-lined tray.
Bake 10–12 minutes, just until bottoms are lightly golden
(tops should stay pale). - Finish
Cool completely.
Dust generously with powdered sugar.
