🛒 Ingredients

  • 1 medium Savoy cabbage, chopped
  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled & diced
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp oil or lard
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1½ tsp Hungarian sweet paprika
  • ¼ tsp caraway seeds (optional but traditional)
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste
  • 3 cups water or vegetable broth

For Thickening (Rántás – optional but classic)

  • 1 tbsp oil or lard
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • ½ tsp Hungarian sweet paprika

To Serve (Traditional Options)

  • Fried sausage or smoked kielbasa
  • Fried eggs
  • Meatballs or pork cutlets

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Prepare the Base
    • Heat oil/lard in a pot.
    • Sauté onion until soft and translucent.
    • Add garlic and cook briefly.
  2. Paprika Step
    • Remove pot from heat.
    • Stir in paprika and caraway seeds (prevents burning).
  3. Cook the Vegetables
    • Add cabbage and potatoes.
    • Season with salt and pepper.
    • Add water/broth, cover, and simmer 25–30 minutes, until tender.
  4. Traditional Thickening (Optional)
    • Heat oil, stir in flour until lightly golden.
    • Remove from heat, add paprika.
    • Stir into stew and simmer 5 minutes.
  5. Adjust & Serve
    • Taste and adjust seasoning.
    • Stew should be creamy, not soupy.
