🥘 Hungarian Pork Stew (Sertéspörkölt)

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs pork shoulder or pork butt, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 tbsp lard or vegetable oil
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tbsp Hungarian sweet paprika
  • ½ tsp hot paprika or cayenne (optional, for heat)
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds (lightly crushed)
  • 2 medium tomatoes, peeled and chopped (or 1 cup canned diced tomatoes)
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1–2 cups beef or pork broth (or water)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 bay leaf

Optional additions:

  • 1–2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed (for extra heartiness)
  • 1 tbsp flour mixed with 2 tbsp water (if you like a thicker stew)
