Hungarian Goulash🇭🇺

Yesss Ashley!! You can’t talk Hungarian food without bowing to the king of comfort dishes: Hungarian Goulash (Gulyás) 🇭🇺❤️‍🔥

This isn’t just a stew — it’s a full-on flavor experience passed down through generations. Rich, beefy, and loaded with sweet paprika and tender veggies, it’s the dish Hungarian grandmas swear by to warm your soul on cold days.

🍲 Hungarian Goulash (Gulyásleves)

A slow-simmered, paprika-rich beef soup — hearty, rustic, and 100% soul-soothing.

📝 Ingredients (Serves 4–6):

  • 2 tbsp lard or oil (lard is traditional!)
  • 2 medium onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika (the star 🌟)
  • 500g (1 lb) stewing beef, cut into bite-sized chunks
  • 1 large tomato, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 2 parsnips, sliced
  • 2 potatoes, cubed
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds (optional but authentic)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 6–7 cups water or light beef broth
  • Optional: Csipetke (tiny pinched egg noodles)

👩‍🍳 Directions:

1. Sauté the aromatics:

In a large pot, heat lard/oil. Add onions and cook until golden. Stir in garlic and caraway (if using).

2. Paprika moment!

Remove pot from heat for a second, stir in paprika (this keeps it from burning and getting bitter). Add beef immediately and toss to coat.

3. Build the flavor:

Return to heat, add tomato and bell pepper. Cook for 10 minutes, stirring now and then.

4. Simmer:

Add carrots, parsnips, and enough water/broth to cover. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer gently for 1–1.5 hours until beef is tender.

5. Potatoes in:

Add cubed potatoes and cook for another 20–25 minutes. Add more water if needed.

6. (Optional) Add Csipetke:

Make a quick dough with flour and egg, pinch off tiny bits, and toss them in during the last 10 mins of cooking.

🧡 Ashley’s Goulash Tips:

  • No shortcuts on the paprika! Use real Hungarian sweet paprika — it’s the magic.
  • Serve with crusty bread or fresh pickled cucumbers for that traditional table vibe.
  • Leftovers? Even better the next day. The flavors deepen and become chef’s kiss.
