Hungarian Doughnuts (Szalagos Fánk)

Ingredients

  • 500 g (4 cups) all-purpose flour
  • 250 ml (1 cup) warm milk
  • 7 g (2¼ tsp) dry yeast
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 60 g (¼ cup) sugar
  • 60 g (¼ cup) melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt
  • Oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast in warm milk with 1 tablespoon sugar. Let rest 10 minutes.
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, salt, sugar, egg yolks, butter, vanilla, and yeast mixture.
  3. Knead until soft and elastic (about 10 minutes).
  4. Cover and let rise until doubled (about 1 hour).
  5. Roll out dough and cut into rounds.
  6. Let rise again for 20–30 minutes.
  7. Fry in medium-hot oil until golden on both sides.
  8. Drain on paper towels and dust with powdered sugar.
