Hungarian Donuts (Szalagos Fánk)

Ingredients

  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 packet (7 g) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 3 egg yolks
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar or jam, for serving

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm milk with 1 tbsp sugar; let foam 10 minutes.
  2. Mix flour, remaining sugar, salt, egg yolks, melted butter, and vanilla. Add yeast mixture and knead until smooth.
  3. Cover and let rise 1–1½ hours until doubled.
  4. Roll dough to ½-inch thickness; cut circles. Rest 15 minutes.
  5. Fry in 170°C / 340°F oil, covered for first side, then uncovered, until golden.
  6. Drain, dust with powdered sugar, and serve with jam.
