Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Bake the puff pastry sheets separately until golden and crisp. Let cool.
  3. Heat milk in a pot until warm (not boiling).
  4. In a bowl, whisk egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch until smooth.
  5. Slowly pour warm milk into the mixture while whisking.
  6. Return mixture to the pot and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thick.
  7. Remove from heat, add vanilla and butter, and mix well.
  8. Place one puff pastry sheet in a pan, spread the hot custard evenly.
  9. (Optional) Add a layer of whipped cream on top of the custard.
  10. Cover with the second pastry sheet.
  11. Chill for at least 3–4 hours until set.
  12. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
