Hungarian Christmas Walnut Cookies (Hókifli)

Ingredients:

  • 250 g all-purpose flour
  • 200 g unsalted butter, softened
  • 100 g sour cream
  • Pinch of salt

Walnut Filling:

  • 200 g ground walnuts
  • 100 g sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For Finishing:

  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, mix the flour, butter, sour cream, and salt until a smooth dough forms.
  2. Wrap the dough and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  3. For the filling, combine the ground walnuts, sugar, milk, and vanilla until a thick paste forms.
  4. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. Roll out the dough and cut it into small squares.
  6. Place a small spoonful of walnut filling in the center of each square.
  7. Roll or fold the dough around the filling and shape into crescents.
  8. Arrange on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until lightly golden.
  10. Let cool slightly, then generously dust with powdered sugar.
