
Hungarian Christmas Walnut Cookies (Hókifli)
Ingredients:
- 250 g all-purpose flour
- 200 g unsalted butter, softened
- 100 g sour cream
- Pinch of salt
Walnut Filling:
- 200 g ground walnuts
- 100 g sugar
- 2–3 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For Finishing:
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions:
- In a bowl, mix the flour, butter, sour cream, and salt until a smooth dough forms.
- Wrap the dough and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- For the filling, combine the ground walnuts, sugar, milk, and vanilla until a thick paste forms.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the dough and cut it into small squares.
- Place a small spoonful of walnut filling in the center of each square.
- Roll or fold the dough around the filling and shape into crescents.
- Arrange on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until lightly golden.
- Let cool slightly, then generously dust with powdered sugar.
