Hungarian Chicken Paprikash (Csirkepaprikás)

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces (or 2 lbs chicken thighs/drumsticks)
  • 2 tbsp oil or lard
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp Hungarian sweet paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced (optional)
  • 1 tomato, chopped (optional)
  • 1 cup chicken broth or water
  • 3/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 tbsp flour

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil in a large pot, sauté onions until soft and lightly golden.
  2. Remove from heat, add paprika and stir quickly.
  3. Add chicken pieces, salt, pepper, pepper, and tomato.
  4. Add broth, cover and simmer 35–40 minutes until chicken is tender.
  5. Mix sour cream with flour, stir into the sauce.
  6. Simmer 5 minutes until thick and creamy.
  7. Serve hot with nokedli or egg noodles.
