Hungarian Chicken Paprikash (Chicken and Dumplings)

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs chicken thighs or drumsticks
  • 2 tbsp oil or lard
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp Hungarian sweet paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced (optional)
  • 1 tomato, chopped (optional)
  • 1 cup chicken broth or water
  • 3/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 tbsp flour

Dumplings (Nokedli):

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil in a pot, sauté onions until soft. Remove from heat, stir in paprika.
  2. Add chicken, salt, pepper, pepper slices, and tomato.
  3. Add broth, cover and simmer 35–40 minutes until chicken is tender.
  4. Mix sour cream with flour, stir into sauce, simmer 5 minutes.

Dumplings:

  1. Mix flour, egg, salt, and water into sticky dough.
  2. Drop small dumplings into boiling salted water.
  3. Cook until they float, remove and drain.

Serve:

  • Spoon chicken and sauce over dumplings and serve hot.
