Hungarian Chicken Paprikas & Dumplings

Instructions

1. Cook the Chicken

  • Heat oil in a large skillet or pot over medium heat.
  • Add chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent.
  • Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute.

2. Add Paprika

  • Remove the pan briefly from heat and stir in the paprika to prevent burning.

3. Simmer

  • Add chicken pieces, tomato, and bell pepper.
  • Pour in chicken broth, season with salt and pepper.
  • Cover and simmer for 35–40 minutes until the chicken is tender.

4. Make the Creamy Sauce

  • In a bowl, mix sour cream with flour and a few spoonfuls of the hot sauce from the pot.
  • Stir the mixture back into the pot and simmer gently for 5 minutes until the sauce thickens.

5. Prepare the Dumplings

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  • In a bowl, mix flour, salt, eggs, and enough water to form a thick batter.
  • Drop small spoonfuls of batter into boiling water.
  • Cook 2–3 minutes until dumplings float, then drain.

6. Serve

  • Spoon chicken paprikás over the dumplings and garnish with fresh parsley.

🇭🇺 Tip: Traditional Hungarian paprikás tastes best with authentic sweet Hungarian paprika and a generous spoonful of sour cream for that signature creamy sauce.
