Hungarian Braised Beef (Pörkölt) – Recipe Only

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg beef (chuck or shoulder), cut into cubes
  • 3 large onions, finely chopped
  • 3 tbsp oil or lard
  • 2 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped (optional)
  • 1 tomato, chopped (optional)
  • 2–3 cups water or beef broth

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil in a pot and sauté onions until soft and golden.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in paprika.
  3. Add beef, salt, pepper, garlic, and caraway seeds; mix well.
  4. Add bell pepper and tomato if using.
  5. Pour in water or broth to just cover the meat.
  6. Cover and simmer on low heat for 1.5–2 hours until beef is tender, stirring occasionally.
  7. Adjust seasoning and serve hot with bread, dumplings, or noodles.
