🇭🇺 Hungarian Apple Pie (Almás Pite)

Ingredients

Dough:

  • 2½ cups (300g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (100g) sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup (200g) cold butter, cubed
  • 1 egg
  • 2–3 tablespoons sour cream

Filling:

  • 2 lbs (900g) apples, peeled and grated
  • ½ cup (100g) sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs

Topping:

  • Powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Rub in butter until crumbly.
  2. Add egg and sour cream. Knead into smooth dough. Divide in two and chill 30 minutes.
  3. Mix grated apples with sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice.
  4. Roll out one dough portion into a greased 9×13-inch pan. Sprinkle breadcrumbs.
  5. Spread apple mixture evenly.
  6. Roll out second dough portion and place on top. Prick with fork.
  7. Bake at 350°F (180°C) for 35–40 minutes until golden.
  8. Cool and dust with powdered sugar before slicing.
