Hungarian apple fritters, Alma pongyolában

Here’s the traditional Hungarian Apple Fritters – Alma Pongyolában 🍎🇭🇺
Crispy on the outside, soft and tender inside, usually dusted with powdered sugar and served warm.

🍎 Hungarian Apple Fritters (Alma Pongyolában)

Ingredients

  • 3–4 medium apples (Granny Smith or similar)
  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup (120 ml) milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar (or vanilla extract)
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples
Peel the apples, remove the cores, and slice into rings about ½ cm thick. Sprinkle lightly with cinnamon if desired.
  2. Make the batter
In a bowl, whisk the eggs with sugar, vanilla sugar, and salt.
Add the milk, then gradually whisk in the flour until you get a smooth, thick batter (similar to pancake batter).
  3. Heat the oil
Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium heat. The oil should be hot but not smoking.
  4. Coat the apples
Dip each apple ring into the batter, letting excess drip off.
  5. Fry
Fry the coated apple rings in batches for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and puffed.
  6. Drain & serve
Remove and drain on paper towels.
Dust generously with powdered sugar and serve warm.
