👩🍳 Instructions:
1. Make the hamburger steaks:
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Mix until just combined — don’t overmix.
- Shape into 4–6 oval patties.
2. Brown the patties:
- In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook the patties for about 3–4 minutes per side until browned (they don’t have to be cooked through yet).
- Remove and set aside.
3. Make the onion gravy:
- In the same skillet, melt butter.
- Add sliced onions and cook on medium until soft and golden brown (about 10 minutes).
- Sprinkle in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to make a roux.
- Slowly whisk in beef broth, then add Worcestershire, salt, and pepper.
- Simmer until slightly thickened (about 3–5 minutes).
4. Simmer everything together:
- Return hamburger steaks to the pan.
- Cover and simmer in the gravy on low for about 20 minutes, or until the steaks are cooked through and the flavors meld beautifully.
🍽️ Serve with:
- Mashed potatoes
- Green beans or steamed broccoli
- A hunk of buttered cornbread if you’re feeling Southern 😉
