- 2 tbsp oil or butter
- 1–2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp paprika (Hungarian sweet paprika)
- 1 tbsp flour
- 1 cup (240 ml) water or vegetable broth
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) sour cream
- 1 tbsp vinegar (or lemon juice)
- 1 tsp sugar (optional, balances flavor)
- Salt and black pepper (to taste)
- 1 bay leaf (optional)
