Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
  • Salt & black pepper
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices rye bread (or sourdough)
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese (or Gruyère / Cheddar)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions
    • Heat butter in a skillet over medium-low heat.
    • Add onions and cook 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deep golden.
    • Set aside.
  2. Cook the patties
    • Season beef with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire.
    • Form 4 thin oval patties.
    • Cook in a hot skillet with olive oil 3–4 minutes per side. Remove.
  3. Assemble
    • Butter one side of each bread slice.
    • Place bread butter-side down.
    • Add cheese, patty, onions, more cheese, and top with bread.
  4. Grill
    • Cook on medium heat 3–4 minutes per side until bread is crisp and cheese melted.
  5. Serve
    • Rest 1 minute, slice, and enjoy.

  • Add a thin spread of garlic aioli or Dijon mustard inside
  • Mix Gruyère + Swiss for deeper flavor
