👩🍳 Instructions
1. Prep bread
Cut stale bread into cubes.
Place in a greased baking dish.
2. Sauté onion (optional but delicious)
In a small pan, cook chopped onion in butter until soft.
Add to the bread.
3. Make the savory custard
In a bowl whisk together:
- Eggs
- Milk
- Garlic powder
- Paprika
- Oregano
- Salt & pepper
Pour evenly over the bread cubes.
Let the bread soak 5 minutes so it absorbs everything.
4. Add cheese
Sprinkle cheese all over the top
(or mix some inside + some on top for extra gooeyness).
5. Bake
Bake at 190°C / 375°F for 25–30 minutes,
or until the top is golden, crisp, and puffed.
🤤 Texture
- Top: crispy, golden, slightly cheesy
- Inside: soft, moist, savory, full of flavor
- Bottom: custardy and satisfying
A true comfort dish!
🌟 Optional Add-Ins (make it amazing!)
- Ham or turkey pieces
- Bacon bits
- Chopped spinach
- Sautéed mushrooms
- Corn or peas
- Fresh herbs
- Sun-dried tomatoes
- Feta or parmesan on top
🧊 Storage
- Fridge: 3 days
- Reheat in oven or air fryer to keep it crisp
💡 Tip
If your bread is not too stale, toast the cubes in the oven 5 minutes to dry them slightly — they’ll soak the custard perfectly.
