Fried Cheese (Rántott Sajt)

Breaded mozzarella cheese sticks served with tomato sauce

Yesss 😍🧀 Rántott Sajt is a Hungarian favorite—crispy outside, gooey inside, and totally addictive. Here’s the classic, foolproof version just like you’d get in Hungary.

🇭🇺 Fried Cheese (Rántott Sajt)

Ingredients

  • 4 slices semi-hard cheese (Edam, Trappista, Gouda, or Emmental)
  • Salt (optional)
  • All-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Prep the cheese
Cut cheese into thick slices (about 1–1.5 cm). Pat dry.
  2. Breading station
    • Bowl 1: flour
    • Bowl 2: beaten eggs
    • Bowl 3: breadcrumbs
  3. Double coat (important!)
Dip cheese in flour → egg → breadcrumbs → egg again → breadcrumbs again.
Press breadcrumbs firmly to seal edges.
  4. Chill
Place breaded cheese in the freezer for 20–30 minutes (don’t skip—prevents leaking).
  5. Fry
    Heat oil to 170–180°C (340–355°F).
Fry cheese quickly, 1–2 minutes per side until golden.
  6. Drain & serve
Drain on paper towels. Serve immediately while melty inside 🤤
