🍲 Easy Hungarian Pork Paprikash

🛒 Ingredients

  • 2 lbs (900 g) pork shoulder or pork stew meat, cubed
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil or lard
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • 2 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • ½ tsp hot paprika (optional)
  • 1 cup chicken or pork broth
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds (optional)
  • ¾ cup sour cream
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour (for thickening)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Brown the pork
    Season pork with salt and pepper.
    Heat oil/lard in a pot over medium-high heat.
    Brown pork on all sides. Remove and set aside.
  2. Cook the onion
    In the same pot, add onion.
    Cook until soft and lightly golden.
  3. Add paprika (important!)
    Remove pot from heat.
    Stir in sweet and hot paprika quickly (prevents bitterness).
  4. Simmer
    Return pork to pot.
    Add broth and caraway seeds.
    Bring to a gentle simmer, cover, and cook 60–75 minutes until tender.
  5. Finish with sour cream
    Mix sour cream with flour until smooth.
    Stir into stew and simmer 5–10 minutes until creamy.
  6. Season & serve
    Adjust salt and pepper.
