Classic Layered Meat Lasagna Recipe

Instructions

1. Prepare the Meat Sauce

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pan.
  2. Add onion and sauté until soft.
  3. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  4. Add ground beef, season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned.
  5. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, and all seasonings.
  6. Reduce heat and simmer 20–30 minutes until thick and rich.

2. Prepare the Cheese Mixture

  1. In a bowl, mix ricotta, egg, Parmesan, parsley, salt, and pepper.
  2. Stir until smooth and creamy.

3. Cook the Lasagna Noodles (if using regular)

  • Cook in salted boiling water until al dente, then drain and lay flat on parchment paper so they don’t stick.

4. Assemble the Lasagna

Use a 9×13 inch (23×33 cm) baking dish.

  1. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom.
  2. Layer 3 lasagna noodles.
  3. Spread ⅓ of the ricotta mixture.
  4. Add ⅓ of the meat sauce.
  5. Sprinkle mozzarella.

Repeat three layers in total:

  • Noodles
  • Ricotta
  • Meat sauce
  • Mozzarella

Finish with a final layer of mozzarella + extra Parmesan.

5. Bake

  • Cover with foil (spray the foil with oil so it doesn’t stick to the cheese).
  • Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake 20 more minutes until golden and bubbly.
  • Let rest 10–15 minutes before cutting.

Serving Suggestions

  • Garlic bread
  • Green salad
  • Steamed broccoli
  • A little extra Parmesan on top

🍝 Tips for the Best Lasagna

  • Let it rest before cutting — it sets perfectly.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the meat sauce for Italian grandma flavor.
  • Use whole-milk ricotta and low-moisture mozzarella for the creamiest texture.
