Ingredients

  • 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1½ cups (300 g) granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups (190 g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (50 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup milk or heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C). Grease and line a loaf pan.
  2. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla.
  4. In a bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Add dry ingredients to batter alternately with milk, mixing just until combined.
  6. Pour batter into pan and smooth the top.
  7. Bake 60–70 minutes, until a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs.
  8. Cool in pan 15 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.

Optional Glaze

  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2–3 tbsp milk
    Mix and drizzle over cooled cake.
