Banana Bread Brownies with Brown Butter Frosting

Ingredients (Makes 1 9×9-inch pan)

For the Banana Brownies:

  • 2 ripe bananas, mashed
  • ½ cup (115 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup (100 g) brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup (25 g) cocoa powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt

For the Brown Butter Frosting:

  • ½ cup (115 g) unsalted butter
  • 1½ cups (180 g) powdered sugar
  • 1–2 tbsp milk or cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: 350°F (175°C). Grease or line a 9×9-inch pan with parchment paper.
  2. Make banana brownie batter:
    In a large bowl, combine mashed bananas, melted butter, brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla.
    In a separate bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
    Fold dry ingredients into wet until just combined.
  3. Bake brownies:
    Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out mostly clean. Cool completely.
  4. Make brown butter frosting:
    • In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat, stirring occasionally until it turns golden brown and smells nutty. Remove from heat.
