Amish Baked Custard 🍮

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups (480 ml) whole milk
  • ⅓ cup (65 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Ground nutmeg (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: 350°F (175°C).
  2. Mix custard: In a bowl, whisk eggs, sugar, salt, and vanilla until combined. Slowly stir in milk.
  3. Prepare baking dish: Pour mixture into a greased 1-quart baking dish. Sprinkle lightly with nutmeg if desired.
  4. Bake in water bath: Place the baking dish in a larger pan. Fill the larger pan with hot water halfway up the sides of the custard dish.
  5. Bake: 40–50 minutes, until custard is set but slightly jiggly in the center.
  6. Cool and serve: Remove from water bath, cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Serve chilled.
