
🇭🇺 Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls (Töltött Káposzta)
Ingredients
Filling:
- 1 lb (450 g) ground pork (or pork & beef mix)
- ½ cup uncooked rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon Hungarian sweet paprika
Cabbage:
- 1 large head green cabbage
- 2 cups sauerkraut (optional, for layering)
Sauce:
- 2 cups crushed tomatoes or tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon Hungarian sweet paprika
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 cup broth or water
- Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
- Core cabbage and boil whole head 5–8 minutes. Remove softened leaves carefully and let cool.
- In a bowl, mix ground meat, rice, onion, egg, salt, pepper, and paprika.
- Place a spoonful of filling on each cabbage leaf. Fold sides inward and roll tightly.
- Spread some sauerkraut on bottom of a large pot (if using). Arrange cabbage rolls seam-side down in layers.
- Mix tomato sauce, paprika, sugar, broth, salt, and pepper. Pour over rolls.
- Cover and simmer gently 60–90 minutes until rice and cabbage are tender.
- Serve hot with a spoonful of sour cream if desired.
