🇭🇺 Pogácsa – Traditional Hungarian Biscuits

Soft, flaky, savory biscuits that are a staple in Hungary. Perfect as a snack, party food, or alongside soups and stews.


Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup butter or lard, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 packet (7 g) dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg (for brushing)
  • ½ cup grated cheese (optional, for topping)

Directions

  1. Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm milk. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add butter and rub in until crumbly.
  3. Add sour cream and yeast mixture. Knead into a soft dough.
  4. Cover and let rise 45–60 minutes.
  5. Roll dough about ¾-inch thick. Score the top in a crisscross pattern.
  6. Cut into small rounds using a biscuit cutter.
  7. Place on lined baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle cheese if using.
  8. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20–25 minutes until golden.

Serve warm or at room temperature. 🇭🇺
