
Hungarian Braised Beef (Pörkölt) – Recipe Only
Ingredients:
- 1 kg beef (chuck or shoulder), cut into cubes
- 3 large onions, finely chopped
- 3 tbsp oil or lard
- 2 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp caraway seeds (optional)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped (optional)
- 1 tomato, chopped (optional)
- 2–3 cups water or beef broth
Instructions:
- Heat oil in a pot and sauté onions until soft and golden.
- Remove from heat and stir in paprika.
- Add beef, salt, pepper, garlic, and caraway seeds; mix well.
- Add bell pepper and tomato if using.
- Pour in water or broth to just cover the meat.
- Cover and simmer on low heat for 1.5–2 hours until beef is tender, stirring occasionally.
- Adjust seasoning and serve hot with bread, dumplings, or noodles.
