🇭🇺 Cottage Cheese Dumplings

Túrógombóc

Ingredients

  • 10 oz (300 g) cottage cheese (farmer cheese if available)
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tbsp semolina (farina)
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • Pinch of salt

Breadcrumb Coating

  • ¾ cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp butter

For Serving

  • Sour cream
  • Powdered sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix cottage cheese, egg, semolina, flour, and salt until combined.
  2. Cover and refrigerate for 20–30 minutes to allow semolina to swell.
  3. With wet hands, form small dumplings.
  4. Bring a pot of lightly salted water to a gentle boil. Add dumplings and cook until they float, then cook 2–3 more minutes.
  5. In a pan, toast breadcrumbs in butter until golden.
  6. Roll cooked dumplings in breadcrumbs.
  7. Serve warm with sour cream; dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Tips

  • Don’t overwork the mixture—dumplings should be light
  • Traditional Hungarian style uses farmer cheese, not wet cottage cheese
  • Sweet or lightly savory, depending on topping 🇭🇺💛
