This legendary Hungarian dessert, Somlói Galuska, is a heavenly combination of sponge cake, chocolate sauce, walnuts, rum, whipped cream, and raisins. It’s often called Hungary’s most famous trifle — rich, layered, and utterly irresistible. 💛


🍮 Ingredients:

For the sponge cakes:

  • 6 large eggs, separated
  • ¾ cup (150 g) sugar
  • ¾ cup (90 g) flour
  • ¼ cup (30 g) ground walnuts
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • Pinch of salt

(Traditionally, three different sponges are made: plain, walnut, and cocoa — but you can make one large sponge and flavor it in sections!)


For the syrup:

  • 1 cup (240 ml) water
  • ½ cup (100 g) sugar
  • 2 tbsp dark rum
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the chocolate sauce:

  • 1 cup (240 ml) milk
  • ½ cup (100 g) sugar
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 oz (30 g) dark chocolate
  • 1 tbsp butter

For layering:

  • ½ cup (60 g) chopped walnuts
  • ½ cup (80 g) raisins (soaked in rum or warm water)
  • Whipped cream (for topping)
