🧀 Liptauer – Hungarian Cheese Spread 🇭🇺

🥣 Instructions:

  1. Mash & Blend:
    • In a bowl, mash the sheep cheese and cream cheese together until smooth.
    • Add the butter and mix until creamy.
  2. Flavor it Up:
    • Stir in paprika, mustard, crushed caraway seeds, and minced onion.
    • Add salt and pepper to taste.
    • If the mixture is too thick, add sour cream a tablespoon at a time until spreadable.
  3. Optional Add-ins:
    • Mix in chopped pickles or capers for extra tang.
    • A few drops of Worcestershire sauce can deepen the flavor.
  4. Chill (Optional but Recommended):
    • Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour to let the flavors blend beautifully.
  5. Serve:
    • Bring to room temperature before serving.
    • Serve with rye bread, pretzels, raw vegetables, or as a sandwich spread.

💡 Tips:

  • For a smoky twist, add smoked paprika or roasted red pepper purée.
  • Traditionally served in Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary — every household has its own variation.
  • Keeps well in the fridge for 3–5 days in an airtight container.
