Hungarian Tart (Lekváros Pite) is a buttery, crumbly shortcrust pastry filled with sweet fruit jam and topped with a beautiful lattice crust. This simple yet delicious dessert is a classic in Hungarian households, often served with tea or coffee. It’s especially popular with apricot or plum jam, but you can use any jam you love!
🛒 Ingredients (Makes 1 tart, 9×13-inch pan)
✔ 300 g (2 ½ cups) all-purpose flour 🌾
✔ 150 g (⅔ cup) sugar ❄
✔ 1 tsp baking powder ✨
✔ 1 pinch salt 🧂
✔ 150 g (⅔ cup) unsalted butter, cold & cubed 🧈
✔ 2 egg yolks 🥚
✔ 100 ml (⅓ cup) sour cream 🥄
✔ 1 tsp vanilla extract 🍦
For the Filling:
✔ 250 g (1 cup) thick apricot, plum, or raspberry jam 🍑🍓
For Brushing:
✔ 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash) 🥚
👩🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Make the Dough
- In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Add cold butter cubes and rub them into the flour until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
- Stir in egg yolks, sour cream, and vanilla extract, and mix until a dough forms.
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.
2️⃣ Assemble the Tart
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Divide the dough into two portions (⅔ for the base, ⅓ for the lattice).
- Roll out the larger portion and press it into a greased 9×13-inch baking pan.
- Spread jam evenly over the dough.
- Roll out the remaining dough and cut it into strips for a lattice top.
3️⃣ Bake & Serve
- Brush the lattice with beaten egg for a golden finish.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
- Let it cool, then slice into squares or bars.
