Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease or line a 9×13-inch baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. Make the batter:
    • Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
    • Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each.
    • Stir in vanilla (and almond extract, if using).
    • Mix in flour and salt until a smooth dough forms.
  3. Assemble the bars:
    • Spread about 2/3 of the dough evenly in the prepared baking dish.
    • Spoon cherry pie filling over the top, spreading gently to cover.
    • Drop remaining dough in spoonfuls over the filling — it doesn’t need to cover completely.
  4. Bake:
    • Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the top is lightly golden and a toothpick comes out clean from the crust.
  5. Cool & glaze:
    • Let the bars cool completely.
    • In a small bowl, whisk powdered sugar, milk, and extract to form a drizzle glaze. Drizzle over cooled bars.
  6. Slice & serve:
    • Cut into squares and enjoy the sweet-tart cherry perfection!
