🇭🇺 Traditional Hungarian Kiffle Cookies (Kifli)

🥄 Instructions:

Step 1: Make the Dough

  1. In a large bowl, beat together the butter and cream cheese until creamy and smooth.
  2. Add the sugar and salt, and mix well.
  3. Gradually add the flour, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  4. Divide the dough into 3 or 4 pieces, wrap each in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (or overnight) to firm up.

Step 2: Shape and Fill

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one piece of dough at a time into a thin sheet (about ⅛-inch thick).
  3. Cut into squares about 2½ inches wide.
  4. Place a small amount (about ½ teaspoon) of your chosen filling in the center of each square.
  5. Fold one corner of the square over the filling to the opposite corner, forming a triangle or crescent shape. Gently seal the edges by pressing lightly.
  6. Place the filled cookies onto the prepared baking sheets.
  7. Brush lightly with the beaten egg.

Step 3: Bake

  1. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  2. Cool slightly, then generously dust with powdered sugar while still warm.
