
A classic Hungarian street food — deep-fried flatbread that’s crispy outside, soft inside, and usually topped with garlic, sour cream, and cheese.
Ingredients
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (7 g) dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¾–1 cup warm milk
- 1 tablespoon oil
- Oil for frying
Toppings (Traditional):
- 2 cloves garlic, minced (mixed with 2 tablespoons water)
- ½ cup sour cream
- 1 cup grated cheese
Directions
- Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm milk. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- In a bowl, mix flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and oil. Knead into a soft dough (add more milk if needed).
- Cover and let rise 1 hour until doubled.
- Divide dough into 4–6 pieces. Shape into flat rounds about ½-inch thick.
- Heat oil in a deep pan (about 350°F / 175°C). Fry each piece 1–2 minutes per side until golden.
- Drain on paper towels.
- While warm, brush with garlic mixture. Top with sour cream and grated cheese.
