🇭🇺 Hungarian Yugoslavian Christmas Cookies

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

1️⃣ Make the Dough

In a large bowl, combine flour, powdered sugar, and nuts.
Add the cold butter cubes and rub them into the flour with your fingers or a pastry cutter until crumbly.
Mix in vanilla and lemon zest. Knead gently into a soft dough.

Wrap in plastic and chill for at least 1 hour.

2️⃣ Shape the Cookies

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Roll dough on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness.
Cut into rounds or festive shapes (hearts, stars, etc.).
Use a smaller cutter to make “windows” in half of them (for the tops).

3️⃣ Bake & Fill

Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 10–12 min, until pale golden.
Cool completely.
Spoon jam on the solid cookies, then top with the windowed ones.
Dust generously with powdered sugar ✨

💡 Tips:

  • These get better the next day as the jam softens the cookie.
  • You can make them 2–3 days in advance.
  • Store in an airtight tin and gift them in holiday boxes 🎁
