👩🍳 Instructions:
1. Prepare the Filling:
- In a bowl, combine ground walnuts, sugar, cinnamon, lemon zest, and vanilla.
- Stir in warm milk to create a spreadable mixture.
- Mix in raisins if using.
2. Assemble the Strudel:
- Preheat oven to 180°C / 350°F.
- Lay one sheet of phyllo on a clean kitchen towel. Brush lightly with melted butter.
- Layer 5–6 sheets this way, buttering each layer.
- Spread half the walnut mixture evenly along one edge, leaving a border.
- Roll up gently (like a jelly roll) using the towel to help, and place seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment.
- Repeat for the second strudel.
3. Bake:
- Brush tops with butter and pierce a few holes with a toothpick (to let steam escape).
- Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until golden brown.
4. Cool & Serve:
- Let cool slightly.
- Dust generously with powdered sugar.
- Slice and serve warm or at room temperature.
💡 Tips:
- Diós Rétes pairs beautifully with a cup of strong coffee or tea.
- You can freeze unbaked strudels and bake them fresh when needed.
- For a festive twist, add a touch of rum or orange zest to the filling.
