
🇭🇺 Hungarian Walnut Cake (Diótorta)
Ingredients
Cake
- 6 eggs, separated
- ¾ cup (150 g) sugar
- 1½ cups (180 g) finely ground walnuts
- ½ cup (60 g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- Pinch of salt
Chocolate Buttercream
- 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, softened
- ¾ cup (90 g) powdered sugar
- 3 oz (85 g) dark chocolate, melted
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Optional Topping
- Ground walnuts or chocolate glaze
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 170°C / 340°F. Grease and line a round cake pan (22 cm / 9 inch).
- Beat egg whites with salt until stiff.
- Beat yolks with sugar until pale and thick.
- Fold walnuts into yolk mixture.
- Gently fold in egg whites.
- Sift flour and baking powder, fold in carefully.
- Pour into pan and bake 35–40 minutes. Cool completely.
- Beat butter with powdered sugar until fluffy. Add melted chocolate and vanilla.
- Slice cake, fill and frost with buttercream.
- Decorate with walnuts or glaze if desired.
