
Ingredients
- 4–5 cups (300–350g) day-old sweet bread or crescent rolls, sliced
- 2 cups (480ml) milk
- ½ cup (100g) sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon butter (for greasing dish)
Poppy Seed Mixture:
- ¾ cup (100g) ground poppy seeds
- ¼ cup (50g) powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
For Serving (optional):
- Vanilla custard or whipped cream
- Powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a baking dish with butter.
- Heat milk with sugar and vanilla until warm (do not boil).
- In a bowl, mix ground poppy seeds, powdered sugar, and lemon zest.
- Layer sliced bread in the baking dish.
Pour warm milk evenly over the bread to soak. - Sprinkle poppy seed mixture generously between layers and on top.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes until set and lightly golden.
- Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Traditionally served warm, often with vanilla custard poured over the top.
