Ingredients

  • 4–5 cups (300–350g) day-old sweet bread or crescent rolls, sliced
  • 2 cups (480ml) milk
  • ½ cup (100g) sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for greasing dish)

Poppy Seed Mixture:

  • ¾ cup (100g) ground poppy seeds
  • ¼ cup (50g) powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest

For Serving (optional):

  • Vanilla custard or whipped cream
  • Powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a baking dish with butter.
  2. Heat milk with sugar and vanilla until warm (do not boil).
  3. In a bowl, mix ground poppy seeds, powdered sugar, and lemon zest.
  4. Layer sliced bread in the baking dish.
    Pour warm milk evenly over the bread to soak.
  5. Sprinkle poppy seed mixture generously between layers and on top.
  6. Bake for 20–25 minutes until set and lightly golden.
  7. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Traditionally served warm, often with vanilla custard poured over the top.
