🇭🇺 Hungarian Paprika Potatoes (Paprikás Krumpli)

Ingredients (serves 4–6)

  • 2 lbs (900 g) potatoes, peeled & cut into chunks
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp lard or vegetable oil (traditionally lard is used)
  • 2–3 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 1 Hungarian smoked sausage (kolbász), sliced (optional but traditional)
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped (optional)
  • 2 medium tomatoes, chopped or 1 cup canned diced tomatoes
  • 4 cups (1 liter) water or chicken broth
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste
