🇭🇺 Hungarian Flódni – Layered Jewish-Hungarian Cake

👩‍🍳 Directions:

✨ Step 1: Make the Dough

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt. Add cold butter and rub into the flour with your fingers until crumbly.
  2. Add egg yolks, vanilla, and wine (or water). Knead into a smooth dough.
  3. Wrap and chill for 30 minutes.

🍎 Step 2: Prepare the Fillings

Apple:

  • Squeeze grated apples to remove excess juice.
  • Mix with sugar, cinnamon, and lemon zest.

Walnut:

  • Pour warm milk over ground walnuts, add sugar and vanilla. Stir to form a paste.

Poppy Seed:

  • Pour warm milk over poppy seeds, stir in sugar and orange zest.

🧱 Step 3: Assemble the Layers

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Line a rectangular baking pan (about 9×13 in).
  2. Divide dough into 5 parts:
    • Roll out first part and press into bottom of the pan.
    • Spread poppy seed filling over it.
    • Roll out second dough layer, place on top.
    • Spread walnut filling.
    • Third dough layer, then apple filling.
    • Fourth dough layer, then plum jam.
    • Top with final dough layer.
  3. Prick the top layer with a fork and brush with beaten egg.

🔥 Step 4: Bake and Rest

  • Bake for 60–70 minutes, until golden brown.
  • Cool completely, then refrigerate overnight.
  • Slice cleanly once set – flavors deepen beautifully!
