🇭🇺 Hungarian Christmas Walnut Cookies (Hókifli)

Ingredients

Dough:

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (225g) cold butter, cubed
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • Pinch of salt

Walnut Filling:

  • 1 cup (100g) finely ground walnuts
  • ¼ cup (50g) sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2–3 tablespoons milk (just enough to make a paste)

For Coating:

  • Powdered sugar (generous amount)

Instructions

  1. Mix flour and salt. Cut in cold butter until crumbly.
  2. Add egg yolks, sour cream, and sugar. Knead into a smooth dough.
  3. Wrap and refrigerate for 30–60 minutes.
  4. Mix ground walnuts, sugar, vanilla, and milk until thick paste forms.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Roll dough thin (about ⅛ inch / 3 mm). Cut into small squares (about 2×2 inches).
  7. Place a small amount of walnut filling in the center of each square. Roll into small crescents.
  8. Bake 12–15 minutes until lightly golden (do not overbake).
  9. While still warm, roll generously in powdered sugar.

Cool completely and dust again with powdered sugar before serving.
