🇭🇺 Hungarian Chicken Paprikash (Chicken and Dumplings)

Ingredients

For the Chicken:

  • 2 lbs (1 kg) chicken thighs or drumsticks
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 2 tbsp oil or lard
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp Hungarian sweet paprika
  • 1 tomato, chopped (or ½ cup canned tomatoes)
  • 1 small bell pepper, chopped (optional)
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • ¾ cup sour cream
  • 1 tbsp flour

For the Dumplings (Nokedli):

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • ½–¾ cup water
  • ½ tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Season chicken with salt and pepper.
  2. Heat oil in a large pot. Brown chicken on both sides, then remove and set aside.
  3. In the same pot, sauté onion until soft. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in paprika.
  5. Add tomato and bell pepper. Return chicken to pot and pour in broth.
  6. Cover and simmer 30–40 minutes until chicken is tender.

Prepare Dumplings:
7. Mix flour, salt, eggs, and water to form a soft, sticky batter.
8. Drop small spoonfuls into boiling salted water. Cook 2–3 minutes until they float. Drain.

  1. Mix sour cream with flour and stir into the chicken sauce. Simmer gently 5 minutes until thickened.
  2. Serve chicken and sauce over dumplings.
