🇭🇺 Hókifli – Hungarian Walnut Crescent Cookies

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Make the Dough:

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, powdered sugar, ground walnuts, and salt.
  2. Add cold butter pieces and vanilla.
  3. Rub together with your hands or use a pastry cutter until the dough holds together. (Like a shortbread dough.)
  4. Form into a ball, wrap in plastic, and chill for 30–60 minutes.

2. Shape the Crescents:

  1. Preheat oven to 175°C / 350°F.
  2. Break off small pieces of dough (about the size of a walnut).
  3. Roll into little logs, then bend them into crescent shapes.
    – Try to make them uniform for even baking.

3. Bake:

  1. Place crescents on a baking tray lined with parchment.
  2. Bake for 12–15 minutes until pale golden on the bottom. Tops should remain mostly white.
  3. Don’t overbake—they should be delicate and tender.

4. Coat While Warm:

  1. While still warm (but not too hot), gently roll each crescent in the powdered sugar + vanilla sugar mixture.
  2. Let cool on a rack. The sugar will cling beautifully.

🥡 Storage:

Store in an airtight container at room temperature. They actually taste even better after 1–2 days, once the flavors have settled.

💡 Tips:

  • You can substitute ground almonds or hazelnuts for the walnuts if desired.
  • Dust with extra sugar right before serving for a snowy finish!
  • Perfect for holiday cookie platters or as a gift in a tin box.
